John the Methodist?
Sunday, 24 November 2002 21:24While browing http://www.adherents.com/, I found the following bit in their FAQ, as part of a message from a reader (described as "typical of many we have received from Baptists"):
And why isn't Baptists included in the Christian statistic or why isn't it mentioned? We are the only true Christians living on the face of the earth. You see Jesus Christ was a Baptist, He was baptized by John the Baptist not John The Methodist or John the Catholic.
For some reason, this made me think of the people who say "if English was good enough for Jesus in the Bible, it's good enough for me" or who believe that the King James Version (aka Authorised Version) records the words as literally spoken by Jesus.
And it made me a little sad to read such (IMAO) simple logic spouted forth.

Date: Sunday, 24 November 2002 12:45 (UTC)When I was a little girl I really thought that Jesus said things like "thee" and "thy". What I thought was spoken in "the bible days" was actually what was spoken just a few hundred years ago. *giggle* It's cute for a little kid to think that... but adults, that's something else!

Date: Monday, 25 November 2002 00:56 (UTC)Reminds me of my mom telling me that when she was little and going to a Presbyterian (I think?) church, she used to refuse to say the part about "one holy catholic Church" because she didn't believe in the Catholic (note the difference in capitalization) Church. (More recently, at a funeral, at that part the [Jewish] friend next to me turned and whispered "I thought she was Lutheran!")
