The last time we ate at McDonalds, I finished off with a plain hamburger -- just a patty and a bun.

Surprisingly to me, they knew exactly what I meant. (I guess I don't know what kind of customisations they're prepared to handle)

I had never had one before, but it was really good. Mmmmmmm.

"Hamburger" is what it's called. You ordered it like a profi. ;)

"Hamburger" is what it's called.

If I order "einen Hamburger, bitte", I get ketchup and gherkins, though.

I wasn't sure what wording to use to ask for just the meat and bread, with no other toppings or condiments, but they understood me on the first attempt. (I think I started with "einen Hamburger ohne alles, bitte", then tried to explain, and the lady behind the counter cut me off and asked, "einen 'Hamburger plain', ja? schon klar" or similar.)

Ah ok, I thought you meant a hamburger in contrast to other burgers they have.

"Plain" is something they have a button for on the computer at pretty much all fast food restaurants these days, regardless of what nation they're in.

And yes, just "[item] plain" is the way to get it with just meat and bun, or meat bun and cheese if it's supposed to come with cheese.

Though "plain" sometimes implies that it will lack cheese. For example, my mom once ordered a cheeseburger plain and got a hamburger without cheese.

Should have taken it back. Cheese is supposed to be an item they leave on if you order it plain.
