I know that's in Klingon but my just-woke-up brain can't figure out what it says. Happy Birthday to..somebody?

To [livejournal.com profile] nitaq :) It's her Klingon name.

How much Klingon do you know?

I'm a bit surprised/impressed you even got "Happy Birthday" out of that -- most people only know "Qapla'" and perhaps a curse or two.

Awhile back, I decided to try and teach myself to speak Klingon. I gave up after a couple of weeks, but somehow the bits that I did learn are still lodged in my brain somewhere. Probably next to the Japanese I attempted to learn in order to better understand anime. :D

Doj :)

What did you use to learn? Do you have the paperback Klingon Dictionary?

Fun to know that there's another person on my friends list who knows some Klingon!

I used various sources from the net, but I'd love to get my hands on a copy of the Klingon dictionary. It would do wonders for my geek cred. :D

eBay! 's where I got mine from.

Besides, it's pretty much the definitive guide to Klingon grammar; it'll probably be hard to pick up everything from somewhere else.

Did you try the Klingon Postal Course (http://www.kli.org/study/postcourse.html) downloadable PDF lessons? (Though even that refers to the dictionary for background.) If you want to take the course, I'd offer to correct your lessons if you'd like.

Go get a copy of the dictionary! :D

I wonder if Amazon.com has it?
Hmm.
I haven't tried the Klingon Postal Course, but when I'm not so busy I'd love to give it a shot. *makes a note*

Yes, it does (http://www.amazon.com/Klingon-Dictionary-Star-Trek/dp/067174559X/). Including 127 used & new starting from $0.01!

Yay! Klingon is cool.

Perhaps I should freshen up my knowledge :)

I know no Klingon whatsoever, but I figured that it was "Happy Birthday" from context.

I know absolutely NO Klingon, but somehow it just looked like a Birthday greeting to me :-)

What does it mean literally? And how is it pronounced?

Literally, "may you enjoy your birthday" (qoS = birthday, -lIj = your, Da- = you-it, tIv = enjoy, -jaj = may).

And it's pronounced /qoʂlɪd͡ʒ ɖatɪvd͡ʒad͡ʒ/. Roughly, in English fauxnetics, "koash-lidge Da-tivv-jahj" (though the "sh" and the "D" are both pronounced retroflex -- think of an Indian person speaking English to get an idea of a retroflex "D" -- and the initial sound is further back in the mouth than an English "k").
